In 1843, a fiscally struggling Charles Dickens, whose new novel was selling poorly, started writing a Christmas-themed book just in time for the holiday. Though he made very little money on its publication—he published the book himself with lavish bindings, gilt edgings, and hand-colored illustrations and then set the price at 5 shillings so everyone could afford it—Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” the first and best of his Christmas books, quickly became a holiday tradition and is, perhaps, the author’s best known work.
